Coalition of Non-profit Organizations & Higher Education Institutions

One of the most positive developments that has come from the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina is the creation of a coalition of non-profit organizations and higher education institutions that are currently supporting the city’s system of schools.

The unique partnership between these organizations (which includes co-location of most of them) allows each organization to maximize its efforts and leverage real improvements towards student achievement and success.  The following local and national non-profit organizations are playing a key role and are committed to coordination of efforts to drive transformative change and set a new standard for urban public school reform.

We maintain strong connections between community groups, schools, government agencies, and families. Serving as this critical link, we strive to fill any gaps between existing local youth systems and to create a strong infrastructure that effectively supports the children and youth of New Orleans.

kipp logo KIPP (Knowledge is Power Program) began in 1994 when two teachers, Mike Feinberg and Dave Levin, launched a fifth-grade public school program in Houston, TX, after completing their commitment to Teach For America. In 1995, Feinberg remained in Houston to lead KIPP Academy Middle School, and Levin returned home to New York City to establish KIPP Academy in the South Bronx. These two original KIPP Academies became the starting place for a growing network of schools that are transforming the lives of students in under-resourced communities and redefining the notion of what is possible in public education.
