Criminal Justice Reform Committee Mission:

The glaring light on the dysfunctional Criminal Justice system, provoked citizen action, post Katrina. Created in June 2006, the Criminal Justice Reform Committee of Citizens for 1 Greater New Orleans sought to gain a broad based understanding of the people and processes of our criminal justice system through:

  • In depth interviews of national, state and local criminal justice decision makers
  • The establishment of relationships with key policy makers and stakeholders
  • The Compilation of relevant data and research

Compiling their findings in January 2007, the Criminal Justice Committee released a comprehensive report to the Citizens for 1 Executive Committee; complete with recommended initiatives that called for:

  1. Transparency and Accountability of Criminal Justice functions through an integrated communication system of all criminal justice divisions
  2. A citizen led “watch group”
  3. Need to create a broad based collaborative to further lead reform efforts
