Citizens for 1 Greater New Orleans and the New Orleans Crime Coalition urge you to oppose HB 311.

HB 311, authored by Bodi White, will reduce citizen access to information and undermine the purpose and effectiveness of the newly established Independent Police Monitor in Orleans.  This bill will injure trust in and the effectiveness of the criminal justice system.

Executive Committee Organizations of the New Orleans Crime Coalition include:

  • Citizens for 1 Greater New Orleans
  • Business Council of New Orleans and the River Region
  • Urban League of Greater New Orleans
  • Common Good
  • Metropolitan Crime Coalition
  • New Orleans Police and Justice Association
  • Crime Stoppers

HB 311 proposes to bar any law enforcement agency from releasing information or documents pertaining to internal investigations of police officers unless the investigation resulted in a 15 day suspension or greater discipline. Therefore, Independent Police Monitor reports would be barred from presenting analysis or identifying trends in any public report except for those complaints that resulted in 15 day suspension or more.
